Urgent Opportunity

Full-Time Communications and Development Volunteer

FMS seeks a full-time volunteer to serve for 12 months in our national office in Washington, DC, starting the beginning of June 2010. Our mission: “In the tradition of Saints Francis and Clare, Franciscan Mission Service prepares and supports Catholic lay people for a mission of presence and service in solidarity with poor communities overseas. This transformational experience equips our women and men for a lifelong mission of social change in North America.” Position: The position may assist with all communications, including the quarterly newsletters, website maintenance, special events, mission appeal coordination, research and writing grants, donor software maintenance and processing gifts, supporting the lay missioner program, administrative and other related tasks. We maintain 3-4 full-time volunteers. Assignments and projects are divided according to ability and interest. Requirements: 1. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, business, English, non-profit management, organizational development or other related field. 2. A demonstrated commitment to service and social justice. 3. A demonstrated commitment to one’s own Catholic faith development and openness to learning about the Franciscan charism. 4. A desire to engage in the FMS community beyond the workday, particularly as it relates to living in the FMS residence. Benefits: The volunteer will learn about workings of a small, mission driven non-profit while gaining valuable skills in communications and development. A private room in shared housing in our lay missioner house (also the location of our offices) is provided, as well as a monthly food/living stipend. Basic health care. Opportunities to participate in the formation workshops with our international lay missioners, particularly as they relate to Franciscan spirituality. FMS has a small staff that works together closely. Strong mentorship will be provided. The volunteer will be an integral staff member.
