The 22-Year-Old Grandpa

I have become increasingly frustrated by the designation of taking a “year off” from school. Home for a holiday weekend to visit my family, I was greeted with the following or a similar question no less than six times in two days: “It must be nice to take a year off and re-charge your batteries, not be forced into writing any more papers, huh?” This question, innocent enough, became a casual and routine part of conversation, usually met with a polite half-smile and non-verbal groan. read more »


A Lesson in Education

It seemed like a pretty easy day, until I realized when I filled out my own FAFSA my dad sat next to me at the computer in my family's house.  He practically did the whole thing for me because he wanted to make sure it was correct and because I became exasperated after question 80. read more »


Spiritual – Somewhere beyond Physical

Spirituality is how we care for our spirit, how we relate to the spirits of our neighbors and how we open our spirit to the Divine Spirit that pervades throughout. Like the flame of a candle or a campfire, our spirits are greatly affected by the environment that surrounds us. A Letter to CNVS

Upon graduating from college with a BA is Psychology, I elected to volunteer for a year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.  After volunteering for a year with JVC, I waived my acceptance to a couple of MSW programs and committed to being a volunteer with Casa De Esperanza de Los Niños, INC for one year.  During my 15 hour drive to Houston I began questioning why I decided to leave my family for yet another year.  Once I finally arrived and walked in the front door of casa, I was greeted by several children and instantly felt at home. read more »
